February---What's News???

Hey Class,

This is where we are going to discuss what is "News" in Information Technology! Remember this is due within the first 3 class days of the month!

What to do:

Find a NEWS article about anything to do with computers and read it. Then complete a graphic organizer (from me) to help organize your thoughts. Then come here and post your article review! Remember that this review should include a paragraph summarizing the article, a paragraph highlighting the good, the bad, and the ugly about it, and a paragraph about how it will affect you personally AND society as a whole! If the article is online, link to it as well!

Then, within the first week, you need to make thoughtful comments to at least two other article reviews about something you found interesting or helpful. This response needs to be at least a paragraph of five sentences.

Microsoft potential buyout of Yahoo

Recently Microsoft has offered to buyout Yahoo for an estimated 45 billion dollars. This would come as a very influential merger in the success of the two companies in the web. The companies as of now are both loosing out to rival Google in advertising revenue and daily web traffic. The merger could curb the growth for Google advertising and potentially Microsoft and Yahoo could overtake Google.

The merger of the two companies could mean Microsoft could have a Monopoly over the internet. A disadvantage of this would mean that consumer choice may be limited if Microsoft chooses to link the software to its Internet Explorer or Windows operating system. The merger could also mean lower profits for Microsoft for about a year until they break even in 2012. In the end yahoo shareholders will receive Microsoft stock which is a profit from there initial investment in the company. The merger of two companies could mean better more comprehensive services of those already offered. The only problem would be integration of systems seeing as how both Microsoft and Yahoo offer the same services and whose name will still be featured on them such as email service.

This could effect me by giving me the opportunity to wider range of web based applications and services. I would have access to wider range of Microsoft services and products.

Windows vista is believed by many computer enthusists to be too bloated of an operating system. Dino Nugagic, a fifth-year student from Split, a Croatian city on the Adriatic, has created a program called vLite to trim the 'fat' from windows vista. The free program lets the user take their copy of Vista and remove unwanted components like language packs, or add components like windows updates. From there the user can create an ISO image of their customized vista and burn it to DVD for unattended installion. Nuhagic has expereince in customizing windows operating systems, he is also the creator of nLite which allows for customization of windows 2000 and xp.

Doing all of has allowed for an ISO of as little as 515MB that takes up 1.4GB of hard drive space compared to 15GB with normal Windows Vista. While the performance gain and addition of more hard drive space is useful, removing components that are relied upon by another component of windows might cause errors. Microsoft has recommended against stripping out parts of vista prior to installion, claiming that it might affect the users ability to download future windows updates and service packs.

While I find windows vista a big disappointment I am glad to see that Nuhagic has continued his work from nLite. I have used nLite to create custom windows xp cds and if you know what you want your Os to do, like I do, then it is a great tool to use. I will give vLite a try when I get the chance and see for myself how much better I really can make Vista.

Internet failure hits 2 continents

The under sea cable line was cut in the United Arab Emirates. The only explanation for it was that a passing boat dragged an anchor and it cut through the cable line. Extreme chaos occurred when the internet failure occurred due to the lack of internet for the computers. The stock-market is run through the computers without the computers up the *UAE* was worried that they might lose money. The internet was off for some time on Wednesday.

They have 2 options to fix the internet problem.
The first is to run the internet on the slower cable that was already there. This would fix the problem temporarily. The second was the government has a satellite that will run their backup systems. Although; This wouldn’t give other people direct access to the internet it would allow them to run the stockmarket until the Cable Internet is fixed. They think they’ll have the internet up and running in another 30 days. The UAE is investigating the problem to see whether it was caused by a person or accidental or faulty lines.

This could affect me in the way that the internet lines are placed and buried in the future. The way they're buried at this time is the cheapest way they can do it. It is not very reliable if someone is farming or if they're out in the ocean.

This article is about Korea developing new mobile telephony commutations. This new prototype is a cellular-based 3.9G. This product has been tested and it was successful. The success in the development will allow users to enjoy the Internet, web services, video services, and broadcasting services anytime anywhere and to watch HD videos in cell phones, PDAs and smart phones swiftly. This change lets company conduct business deals while traveling instead of one place. It also makes people lives easier who need to travel a lot for a business. This lets them stay in contact with their companies.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of this new product. One advantage is that you can use the internet while traveling in a car. There are also some disadvantages which are the cost expensive. Another disadvantage is that the product has a big chance of failing. This will lead to more expensive. So this is a good product for big companies with money to spend on this product.

This product may affect me in the future because I want to own a business of my own. It also affects businesses today. This technology will increase the profits because you can do more business deals with other countries easily. This new technology may be the next generation.

Consumers confused -- and often wrong -- about digital TV transition
JOHN DUNBAR
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/01/31/digital.tv.ap/index.html

This article is about how, many people believe that they have to change to digital TV. The main points of this article is starting in 2009, TV stations will start to broadcast in Digital only. Many people believe that they have to buy a digital TV, but the only people that have to pay something are people that get there connection via antenna. Great amounts of customers will not be affected by this change but the people with antenna have to buy a converter. 36% of all consumers are unaware of the transition of them going from diolag to digital.
The advantages to this change is that there will be better pictures for the veiwers. Just imagine watching the superbowl and it looks better than high def. The satillite and cable customers do not have to worry because they are not losing ther connections. But there are many disadvantages to this like how the government is spending 1.5 billion dollars for coupons so the cost of the converter is not that much. The biggest disadvantage is that people have to buy more equipment so they can watch TV.
This will effect me is that it will not effect me not that much because I don’t have a TV getting its connection via antenna. This does affect me in that my taxes are going to paying for the coupons for the converters. It can effect me because in the future because they have to update it anyway some where in the future.

Microsoft's potential buyout of Yahoo would create a monster of a company. Many recent mergers and takeovers in the information technology world have not gone over well and in the end hurt the buying company more than just the cost of the buyout. Microsoft should be careful about this, and the 45 billion that they are offering to Yahoo.

The recent cutting of four underwater telecom cables owned by the telecom group Qatar has left the UAE's internet at a snails pace. Qatar has already rerouted internet traffic and calims that the speed drop is only about 30-40%. It was previously thought that the line was cut by a boat, but the cables are at the bottom of the ocean and unless a boat sinks then the cable can not be cut in this way. Someone has been cutting the cables, who it is though remains a mystery.

In the article Internet failure hits two continents a wide spread internet failure hits the Middle East, tracts of Asia, and North Africa. It was alleged to be cause by a ships anchor accidentally damaging the undersea cables. They are saying that this problem could take to weeks to solve. Although, people in India were concerned about stocks because it might be slowed down in turn effecting stock holders and brokers. The cables connect all sorts of companies. Transferred are made everyday, but were slowed down due to the delay. Fortunately there was not a lot of traffic on Wednesday, so it was not as much as a problem. Right now companies are discussing other ways to run cables.

One advantage was that it didn’t interfere with airline travel because people were stressed with the time changes. A disadvantage though is if the outage continued the situation could create problems between brokers, companies, and investors.

If doesn’t effect me directly, but I could see problems occurring in future since we trade with some of these countries. I could see a problem developing if this continues to happen.

In the article “Third Undersea Internet Cable Cut in Mideast” it informs its readers that a third undersea cable was accidentally cut. This brought Internet access to a standstill in the Mideast because two other cables were damaged previously. With three cables damaged the Internet Service provider told customers it would be 50-60% slower than normal for the next couple of days. FLAG Telecom said they hoped for their cable to back up and operational by the 12th of February. Some who use VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol could not get in contact with family and loved ones. With such slow Internet speeds many gamers who play over the Internet were frustrated with the slow speeds. Though speeds are low, the accident has not affected the Indian Stock Exchange because they are no reliant on the damaged cables.

The only advantage I see is that its keeping young people off the Internet because of the slow speeds thus hopefully they venture outside and get some exercise. However, there are many disadvantages. Such as, people who use VOIP instead of landlines cannot get in contact with loved ones as well as help in case of an emergency. With the slowed Internet access businesses that videoconference with a branch in the Mideast are now no longer able to because of the slow speeds possibly hurting their business and profit margin. Another disadvantage is that people who say pay for an online game and now can no longer access it are only losing money if the problem is not fixed soon.

This accident really doesn’t affect me very much because I do not live in the Middle East. However, if I were a businessman who needed up-to-date changes in my business over seas then it would affect me greatly.
